چکیده

We describe an apparatus for the stabilization of laser frequencies that prevents long-term frequency drifts. A Fabry–Perot interferometer is thermostated by referencing it to a stabilized He–Ne laser ~master!, and its length is scanned over more than one free spectral range allowing the analysis of one or more lines generated by other ~slave! lasers. A digital acquisition system makes the detection of the position of all the laser peaks possible, thus producing both feedback for the thermostat and the error signal used for stabilizing the slave lasers. This technique also allows for easy, referenced scanning of the slave laser frequencies over range of several hundred MHz, with a precision of the order of a few MHz. This kind of stabilization system is particularly useful when no atomic or molecular reference lines are available, as in the case of rare or short lived radioactive species. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1487895#

Stabilization of an optical microscope to 0.1 nm in three dimensions.

Mechanical drift is a long-standing problem in optical microscopy that occurs in all three dimensions. This drift increasingly limits the resolution of advanced surface-coupled, single-molecule experiments. We overcame this drift and achieved atomic-scale stabilization (0.1 nm) of an optical microscope in 3D. This was accomplished by measuring the position of a fiducial mark coupled to the micr...

Long-term stabilization of the length of an optical reference cavity

To obtain a high degree of long-term length stabilisation of an optical reference cavity, its freespectral range is locked by means of an accurate and stable frequency synthesizer. The locking scheme is twofold: a laser is locked on the N mode of a reference Fabry-Perot cavity and part of the laser light is shifted in frequency to be in resonance with the (N+1) mode of the cavity. This shift is...

Long-term laser frequency stabilization using fiber interferometers.

We report long-term laser frequency stabilization using only the target laser and a pair of 5 m fiber interferometers, one as a frequency reference and the second as a sensitive thermometer to stabilize the frequency reference. When used to stabilize a distributed feedback laser at 795 nm, the frequency Allan deviation at 1000 s drops from 5.6 × 10(-8) to 6.9 × 10(-10). The performance equals t...

Long-term frequency stabilization of a continuous-wave tunable laser with the help of a precision wavelengthmeter.

For the first time to our knowledge we experimentally demonstrate an efficient method for the reduction of long-term radiation line drift in single-frequency cw Ti:sapphire and dye lasers that relies on a fast and precise wavelengthmeter together with a digital-analog feedback system. Generation line drift of lasers is reduced approximately by an order of magnitude down to 40 MHz/h, which corre...

Frequency stability of a dual-mode whispering gallery mode optical reference cavity.

We report an investigation of laser frequency stabilization using a whispering gallery mode resonator that is temperature stabilized by a dual-mode technique. This dual-mode technique has yielded mode volume temperature instabilities at the nK level, suggesting that high frequency stability may also be reached. Here, we experimentally and theoretically investigate the dynamics of such a system ...
